How do we weld thin Stainless steel sheets of 0.25 to 0.4mm thick to make solar hot water storage tanks?
Are you talking about the outer covering of the tank, which covers the insulation?... There is no need to use expensive stainless for the outer covering, galvanized carbon steel is sufficient. With regards to welding, resistance spot welding is ideal. Other processes are much more expensive and time-consuming.
If you plan on using pressurized municipal water, then the tank itself MUST follow code for pressure vessels and/or water heaters!
If you don't know what the code for water heaters is, then stop what you're doing. Pressurized hot water is not something to "play around" with.
If you're only intending to make a gravity-feed storage tank which is NOT pressurized, keep in mind that you need to have some type of overflow
For this application, I'd recommend using the 0.4mm sheet exclusively because it's difficult to manually weld such thin sheets, particularly if you need consistent fusion for a leak-proof joint. The labor cost of TIG welding thin sheets is likely to well exceed the cost of materials anyway. Alternately, I might suggest silver brazing, however keep in mind that brazing requires near-perfect fit-up. Gaps wider than about the thickness of the material itself won't be filled.
