Bringing water to Rome was always of great importance in the ancient city - if you could get a steady supply of clean and healthy water as Pope Sixtus V did with the Acqua Felice then it is considered a real success. You could see this success specifically commemorated in fountains all across the city with carvings of emblems and coats of arms.
The fountain of Fontana Paola came into being because Pope Paul V wants to emulate the success of his predecessors and create a new source of water - the Acqua Paola. The source here would establish in the imposition settings Gianicolo, Rome and celebrate their success in the pursuit and misuse of a new water source. It's hard to think in a more appropriate monument to celebrate this as a source, after all.
Pope Paul V instructed two of Fontana - Giovanni and Carlo - to build a Travertine marble fountain in the field who had acquired. Plans for the outdoor fountain including six columns and other parts of masonry were taken from the ruins of the Temple of Minerva. The source Fontana Paolo was a very ambitious project - the designers had to plan and build five arcs (three large and two small) with waterfalls that flow into a basin sunk huge arches to large and small containers for children.
From the family of Pope Paul V weapons - the dragon and the eagle - were obviously well represented in terms of design. As was the custom of the time, their logos were used as decoration source and its success was marked by an inscription for the whole world to see. Sadly, however, did not survive to see the final result though she died ten years after he gave the go ahead to start work. It took more than 70 years in the final to end the source here. Despite the length of time took to complete, not everybody can agree on how well the source of books, either literally or aesthetic. Many people believe that Paolo Fontana contains one of the most striking entries from all sources in Rome. However, many people also believe that water flow does not work as effectively as it should have consider how to set the structure was meant to be.
Although this source is relatively old, also has a resonance to the story recent too. It was here that Garibaldi entered the final phase of his long defense of the Republic. It was over and above the terraces of the source who fought his courageous battle. For many visitors this adds some significance to the source.
