WHICH SHOW IS BETTER, FAMILY GUY OR SOUTH PARK, AND WHY?
ive always wondered what people like better family guy or south park and why, make sure you at least put a small reason
South park on default.
Family Guy is a very overrated show. Sit down and watch through episodes. There will be one, maybe two funny things. Everything else which is intended to generate humour will rely on two things, either combined or separate: randomness and reference.
It's common knowledge among most comedians that the majority of Sheeple will laugh at any reference they know. If you want to make a certain generation laugh, reference things which most members of that generation will probably recognise. The context does not have to be funny, but family guy's normal method of this is simple: make the reference involve randomness. Personally, I do not find this funny, and I see it as a tremendous lack of wit and creativity.
I have not seen all the episodes of South Park; in fact, there are a good deal more episodes which I haven't seen than there are which I have. However, I've found that they seem to be far more creative and engaging (someone needs to try to explain the concept of a plot to Seth and his writers). Subtract the vulgarity, and you'd still have a decent show -- it doesn't depend on it, but it's there for those who respond to it.
It's a shame to see the Simpsons relying more on reference humour, but I would say on a whole the shows don't rely nearly as much on references as Family Guy.
Perhaps Family Guy is funny. If the general populace defines what is funny, then I guess it is. Wit, creativity, and plots all require much more work than Family Guy style humour. Should they care if a minority doesn't enjoy their show because said minority is capable of analysing it and seeing it for what it really is?
I don't wish to offend those intelligent people who may find Family Guy funny. I am merely preemptively addressing this to those who can only express their views in statements such as "FAMILY GUY OWNS!!!!111" without reason and immediately shy away from any intellectual discussion on it.
I would even go so far as say that even those people who love Family Guy would grow bored of it very quickly due to it's heavy reliance on randomness and reference. Once you know the episode, the surprise factor is gone. At that point, hopefully those people will be able to cognitively reevaluate the joke and ask themselves, "Is this actually funny?"
I hope I haven't offended anyone, but these are my opinions; I hope to have given reason enough for them. This question seems to be asked frequently, and the majority of the time I just see a long list of fragments (not even sentences) expressing how great family guy is. The only long, rational and detailed responses are usually those against it. Go figure...
